“…Hard labour is not about building pyramids. It’s changing your habits!”
The Rabbi tapped his finger on the large open page. “The Gemara says, in Egypt, they used to exchange women’s work for the men. Rashi comments that this was hard, because the men were not used to such work. Do you think the women’s work was heavier? No. But it was hard labour because it was different. The men were not accustomed to it.”
The Difficulty of Change
Any time we are in a situation where we are required to change the way we do things or the way we think about things, we struggle. In Chapter 21, the Rabbi explains to May that change is the hardest labor of all.
Change is a fundamental human challenge that we all face, to a lesser or greater extent, throughout our lives. We can frame the problem of change as a conflict to understand better why we struggle with it so much.
